Can you keep corydoras with shrimp

But they also breed in freshwater. That means they lay eggs, and eventually those eggs become tiny little shrimp babies, and we already know that Corys will target babies whenever they need to. However, it's really important that we point out again at this point that a Cory Catfish will only eat these baby shrimp as a last resort.

Plenty of people have kept Corys and Cherry Shrimp together over the years and had a bustling population of both living side-by-side without issue. Basically, we're trying to say that your Corys don't suddenly become cold-blooded predators when baby shrimp arrive. They won't swoop in and wipe out the entire new population just for the sake of it. So whilst Cherry Shrimp are more susceptible to being eaten by Cory Catfish, there are steps you can take to stop this from happening in the first place.

First, make sure your Cory Catfish have access to plenty of food. Yes, this means putting enough in your tank to make sure there are leftovers for the bottom feeders after the surface feeders have had their fill, but it also means you don't clean your tank obsessively.

We get it, a clean tank looks great and your guests will be amazed by all the fish living in such pristine conditions, but if you clean the tank before your Cory Catfish clean it for you by eating the algae and leftovers, etc, then they will grow hungry.

These are the main things you can do to prevent Corys from eating shrimp, since they'll only eat shrimp when they're starving anyway, so keeping them well-fed is the best solution. However, a general tip for keeping Corys and shrimp together is to make sure you provide plenty of plants at the bottom of your tank for your shrimp and Cory Catfish to hide away from one another. For many fish enthusiasts, the two animals will live very well together, provided that they have the correct conditions.

Which we will detail in the next section of this post. What is very interesting is that the temperament of both of these creatures is very similar.

They are peaceful and for the most part, will go about their business without any issues. However, both species are also very active so if you are looking for creatures that will give you lots of enjoyment through observation, then these make a good pairing. We have already discussed the natural habits that make for the most comfortable living conditions for your corydoras and cherry shrimp but creating the right environment for them is so important.

Of course, you will need to ensure that the water parameters remain within the desired levels but there are other things you need to consider. As we touched upon earlier, a heavily planted tank will be best for both of these species. This is because they both like to have plenty of places to hide and enjoy exploring. Moreover, since the shrimp babies may become a meal for the corydoras, having a lot of plant life will limit the number that end up being eaten.

Both of these species need their own room to thrive so it is essential that you provide them with a large enough tank. When it comes to the Cory catfish, the minimum tank size is considered to be 10 gallons, so when keeping the two together, it is obvious that the more spacious the aquarium, the better.
