Allowing the demon to possess Amalia will avoid a fight and "Amalia" will return to her father pretending to be safe and sound. You can compromise and agree to free Kitty without letting her take Amalia, or you can pretend to help Kitty but lie convincingly for a chance to save Amalia. Any course of action besides fighting the demon immediately or leaving will require solving the puzzle in the room.
You will notice that there is a large square behind Kitty with a number of smaller movable squares inside. When you first begin, you will see two small squares coming off the large one, one on the upper left corner, which will be on fire, and one on the bottom right corner.
