Regardless of their reduced circumstances, these characters would have been shocked by the idea that they should be responsible for sweeping, let alone mopping, their own floors.

This situation remained the status quo for so long because it relied on a cheap and abundant supply of labor from unskilled workers, most of them easily exploited women and children who had few, if any, other options, and no employee protections. According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago :. Domestic service represented the leading occupation of women in Chicago and the nation … Domestic work attracted few native-born women because of the long hours, low status, lack of freedom, and close supervision.

Consequently, domestic servants often came from the ranks of the most desperate members of the community, either those too poor to pay for housing or those excluded from other vocations. There is often no Sunday out until after four and no evening out until after eight. Foreign girls do not go into housework for this reason. They prefer the fixed hours of factory and shop work. Ladies are sometimes not honest in money matters concerning the girls they employ. I have known many nice girls to work for little money—two dollars and a half or three dollars a week—and one week out of every five or six the lady would forget, or pretend to forget, to pay for.

I was facing problem when our miad of 12 yrs left without ven telling. I actually worry for Mom who has to do all things in absens eof maid. It was gruelling search for anew one for me and dad. Now we again searched one AND got one. Now why they are so ungrateful?

Now there is no new maid nearby available? Are they really 'MADE'? This indeed is a day to day affair in many families. If we tell them to do the work neatly, they think that we dominate them. Getting a loyal one is a tedious task. As you said, they are made like this.

Since in most of the families as both husband and wife go to work, they are dependant on the maids and this inturn makes them more unsatiable wrt to their salaries and perks. The market demand for them is very high and infact, it should be us, who has to adjust and accomdate them. Hi there! My family has also experienced maids like that. But we are fortunate we have one that has been with us for more than 12 years now.

She has gone and come back several times cause we like her and she is good. I think some maids are just working for the money and not to serve a family. Working is different from serving cause I think if we serve, there is caring in our hearts and we don't just leave.

It can also be because of lack of education. Pardon for that but it can be a factor why people act in such a way that they don't show affection and consideration for others. I clean houses for people too but my services do not include: cooking, ironing, pets or running errands.

I am grateful when people love my service that they end up recommending me to other potential customers. What I am not ungrateful about is when some of my employers treat me as if I'm beneath them.

I'm already charging an affordable rate so they should treat me with dignity and respect as I do with them. I try not to get too friendly with the employers because they may ask too much of me. So I just do my job that I am hired to do. If they wanna make conversation while I'm on the clock and take up my time not cleaning, then I'm still getting paid.

I am a single mom and i can't even imagine having a maid. I work full time and do all the housework myself and wouldn't have it any other way. I would not want to be a maid for anyone.

I'd feel like a slave, i think.
