Possible Pregnancy Unfortunately, your vet will be able to tell if your kitty is definitely pregnant only if she's at least three weeks along, about a third of the way through her pregnancy.

Be aware, it has been known - especially in overweight cats - that pregnancy has gone undetected until the kittens arrive! Go to your vet to get her a check over and ask about how much you should be feeding her, it is all based on her body condition. In many cases kitten food is ideal, this also gives your cat those extra calories she will need - especially in the last trimester.

If she is getting overweight, it might not be the best option, and there may be a more appropriate food. Whatever diet your vet recommends, switch your cat onto this new food gradually over the course of a week or so. This is essential to good kitten health. The diseases we vaccinate against can cause aborted or poorly developed kittens.

This immunity is the only thing the kittens have to protect them against disease until their own vaccinations at 8 weeks old. Worms can be passed to the kittens in her milk. It is important to worm your cat all the way through her pregnancy and lactation with a safe product from your vet. Fleas, are more than just a pest to newborn kittens. Intestinal roundworms are the most common intestinal parasites in cats and occur in cats of all ages throughout the world.

The two common roundworms of cats are called, Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina. Eggs from these worms are passed in the faeces and can remain viable in the environment for several years. These eggs can infect other cats in two ways. First, a cat may eat ingest eggs directly from a contaminated environment.

Toxocara cati is also passed from queens mother cats to kittens through the milk she produces. Whenever a cat is infected with roundworms, some immature forms larvae remain dormant in tissues in the body. This usually causes no harm, but when a female cat becomes pregnant, these larvae migrate to the mammary glands and are excreted in the milk she produces for the kittens.

This is a very common route of infection and we should assume that every kitten will be infected with Toxocara cati as a result. However, to determine if a cat is actually infected with worms, a faeces sample can be collected and examined in the laboratory to look for the presence of the worm eggs.

Hookworms are a type of small intestinal roundworm found in most countries throughout the world, but are more common in some countries than others. These worms can cause damage to the lining of the intestine where they attach to the surface, and this may result in weight loss, bleeding and anaemia.

Common cat hookworms include Ancylostoma tubaeforme, and Uncinaria stenocephala, but other species occur in some countries. Tapeworms are generally long flat worms composed of many segments.

Mature segments containing eggs are released from the end of the tapeworm and are passed in the faeces.
